Spirit of Manila Airlines

Spirit of Manila Airlines is a new airline operating out of Diosdado Macapagal International Airport aka Clark. :P
Quick facts for those who have never heard of them:
Some staff are ex-PAL and other Airlines
Operate 733, MD83 and 763-ER. The 737 is the only one to be seen.
From Clark to many Asian destinations and Kuwait, Bahrain, Doha and Dubai in the Middle East.
Has a leased hangar at Clark
Was due to start operations Nov 2008, delayed to Feb 2009, then again to June 2009. The dates for Clark to Macau were July 13, but the flights never went.

Tair Airways

There was also to be Tair Airways, but their story is a sadder one.
The flight certificate was valid until Nov 2008.
They never had any aircraft, or that was visible at Clark.
They were planning to do Clark to Middle East destinations only.
The staff were hired, the FA's trained. They were never paid, promised to be paid once operations started.
I remember last year looking at training photographs and the FA's were being trained on plastic seats in a hall set in the configuration of an aircraft, not done in a aircraft simulator.
The website doesn't connect anymore, and contact with the company has completely ceased.

You can find more info on Google/Wiki :)

P.s
1. Does anyone have an update on the current situation of SoMA.
2. Off-topic note, I will attempt to paint the 737 for FS2004, thats one of the reasons why I'm looking for a Freeware 737 classic kit (this is in another thread)

Thanks for reading!

I've actually been to Spirit's hangar and operations facility at Clark. This was in March this year. At the time, they actually had two dispatchers manning their OCC, VHF radios and lots of training manuals. They were also managing a non company Citation Jet for charter operations.

Local airline carrier secures flight to Middle East; starts first flight in September
By Marie S. Neri

MANILA, Aug. 3 (PNA) — Local carrier Spirit of Manila has secured the permit to fly the Middle East routes starting next month.

Basilio P. Reyes, chairman of Spirit of Manila Airlines, in an interview said the Civil Aeronautic Boards (CAB) has granted them the unused entitlements of the Philippines to Middle East via the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) in Clark, Pampanga.

Reyes said their first flight will be in September and this will cover the Clark-Dubai and Bahrain routes and vice versa.

”We will be flying the Middle East routes in particular Dubai and Bahrain,” he said.

Last Saturday, August 1, 2009, the 147-seat MD83 aircraft was delivered to Spirit of Manila Airlines in Clark Field, Pampanga.

Reyes said they are also expecting the arrival of three more airplanes by October and December for their Macau, Hongkong and Taipei entitlements.

Initially, there will be three weekly flights for their Middle East routes, but Reyes said they expect to increase their frequencies next year with the arrival of their Widebody 747-400 aircraft.

Recruitment companies had been urging the government to provide direct flights to the Middle East for the OFWs leaving the country due to shortage of seats and higher airfare being charged by foreign airline carriers servicing the Middle East routes.

Meanwhile, Reyes said aside from helping the OFWs, the company is likewise helping boost further the country’s economy.

Currently, Spirit of Manila has 135 employees, mostly coming from the province of Pampanga but they expect it to increase in the next two to three years by more than 700 workers with the arrival of their airplanes.

”For each aircraft, we will be hiring 60 employees and as the aircrafts arrive, we expect to add more workers,” Reyes further said.

”We wanted to help bring more jobs to Pampanga and to participate in the enlargement of the [country’s] economy,” he added.(PNA)

My favorite pet peeve. And even the reporter doesn't correct the error. Sigh.

Further proof of the deteriorating state of English in this country:

Seems that editors just aren't editing these days...

I remember reading an essay about my great grandfather by a former employee of his that would put many a modern day college graduates to shame. He was a product of the public education system in the 1930's. His English was impeccable and he didn't even have a college degree. As Tonet put it in another post, it's a matter of prioritizing.

Guys thank you for the updates for SoMA.
Their livery is a refreshing sight over the 8 ray sun, mango peach pie and so on
But Manila -> Bahrain in a MD-83 in full economy class :?
Well if anyone is on their flights take some shots please and post up a review please.

P.S. I know SoMA and Tair are not related. They are in here to save hosting space and also the two airlines intentions are relatively the same.

Concerning the lack of English skills.
I totally agree with you sir.
The standards for English are deteriorating.
What happened to proof-reading?

Some don't even know that txt is a shortcut to text...

My pet peeve is passing the blame to technology for a simple lack of personal discipline.

By passing the blame we're only allowing ourselves to be slaves to machines supposed to serve us. Proper use of tech allows us to do more than humanly possible, not be lazy.

Technology is and has always been a tool. It's only as good as the person using it. Modern mobile phones with dictionaries and auto-typing functionality, and SMS promos give us almost no excuse to keep sending messages without proper spelling and grammar.

Spirit of Manila unveils its new aircraft at Clark
By FRED ROXAS
August 16, 2009, 5:28pm

CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga – Spirit of Manila Airlines unveiled last Friday its new MD-83 aircraft at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) here.

Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) President and CEO Victor Jose I. Luciano said that more Spirit of Manila airplanes, which include an MD-83, Boeing 747-300, and 747-400 will be arriving in September and November to complete the airline’s fleet in time for its operations in December, this year. The MD-83 aircraft arrived at DMIA last Aug. 1.

The aircraft is expected to fly to Taiwan and Macau and in the Middle East via Qatar, Dubai, Baharain, and Kuwait to serve the transport needs of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), many of them coming from Central and Northern Luzon.

“This will benefit our OFWs working in the Middle East, most of whom are from the Central and Northern Luzon, and will also attract more tourists to visit our country using DMIA,” Luciano said.

Luciano led other officials who included Transportation and Communication Secretary Leandro Mendoza, Spirit of Manila Chairman Basilio Reyes, President and CEO Jimmy Matibag, and Vice President Rene Ocampo, and foreign partner Vice Chairman Hamad Altani in the unveiling event.

Spirit of Manila Airlines is the first large local carrier that will base its operations in Clark, and its airplanes will start flying out of DMIA very soon, he said.

Luciano said the MD-83 aircraft would be used for the Clark-Taiwan flights. “There wiil be no flight between Taiwan and Clark, and this is the right time that we will now have flights to Taiwan.”

“This is the first time, and even former President Fidel Ramos has been proposing Clark-Taiwan flights,” Luciano said.

I'm not even sure I'll still be at OMNI by then. Would have loved to see more 747s operating out of Clark Int'l.

From 767-300ERs to 747-300s to 747-400s. The story gets better with the telling. What's next, 747-800s I suppose?

If we don't see actual flights to back up all the press releases we might as well start calling the airline "Hirit of Manila".
