Airbus A/P Sound

Postby jmrtlara » Wed Apr 11, 2012 6:45 pm

I've always been curious what's the last 2 chime when you disconnect the autopilot (identical to the ATHR disconnect sound)? I saw a YouTube video just recently of an A320 landing, when the pilots disconnected the A/P the ATHR disconnect sound followed but the ATHR remained on until the pilot retard the thrust during flare. I've always wondered if the ATHR disconnect sound is part of the A/P disco sound? Thanks! :D

The sounds for AP disconnection is the so called "Cavalry charge". Depending on the approach capability (CAT 1, CAT 2, CAT 3 SINGLE/DUAL) before the disconnection, a so called "Triple Click" follows the cavalry charge. The triple click sound means a degradation in approach capability (mostly it's from CAT 3 DUAL to CAT 1 in case of "manual" AP disconnection). The triple click sound is also used as an aural alert for mode reversions in newer A320 aircraft.
The sound for A/THR disconnection is a "Single Chime".
Hope that helps :-)

Thanks, Jeff! That's a lot of help. Confusing, really, because the triple click is labeled as ATHRDisconnect sound in most Airbus soundset.

BTW, I was also watching some Swiss International Airlines training videos on YouTube.. man, it must be really nice to fly an empty A320/A330! :D

@Stuka, yeah sorry for not updating my thread :P I think I should post some pics there. I've been released as a F/O since Dec. 8th 2011...some 400h Airbus A32X Line Experience gained since Sept 2011. Lots of runways seen, lots of places been :) The european cities make a good nightstop every once in a while. Really love my job and I'm everytime excited when I enter the flightdeck :D

I think I saw that A330 Training day video, too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dord84KYtmg). My transition to the A330/A340 should take place in around 3 years. But flying short haul is fun and good practice :)

Kenneth, in case you or any of the guys would be interested in using them (cockpit sounds) as your ringtone or message alert tone, this link might be of interest to you.

However, using "50-30-20... Retard! Retard..." might be a bad idea or else people might give you the quizzical look or angry stares.

I don't know if this story is true, but I heard a 5J FO really got it from the captain when they were on finals and his "cavalry charge" ringtone sounded off and the Captain thought the autopilot disengaged...

Jus,

Myth...same story goes around here but with the Terrain Terrain, Pull Up alert... :P I used to have the cavalry charge as my ringtone, but deleted it for obvious reasons
